What Are Trigger Points? — Finding & Releasing Muscle Knots in Men
Trigger points are one of the most common causes of muscle pain. Understanding what they are, how they develop, and how to treat them is essential knowledge for effective massage exchange.
Trigger Point Basics
A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot within a taut band of skeletal muscle. It feels like a small nodule or knot. When pressed, it produces local pain and often refers pain to another area. Active trigger points cause pain at rest; latent trigger points only hurt when pressed.
How They Form
Trigger points develop from muscle overuse, injury, poor posture, stress, or prolonged static positions (like desk work). The muscle fibers contract but fail to release, creating a self-sustaining cycle of tension. Poor circulation in the area perpetuates the problem.
Treatment Through Massage
Sustained pressure on a trigger point (30-90 seconds) can break the contraction cycle. The pain should initially reproduce the familiar pattern, then diminish as the point releases. Follow with stretching and effleurage. Multiple sessions are usually needed for chronic trigger points.
