Trigger Point Therapy Guide for Men — Release Muscle Knots & Pain
Trigger point therapy targets hyperirritable spots in muscle tissue that cause local and referred pain. These 'knots' can restrict movement and cause pain far from their actual location. Learning to find and release them is a valuable skill for any massage practitioner.
What Are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are tight bands of muscle fiber that form when muscles don't relax. They feel like small nodules and are tender when pressed. Uniquely, trigger points can refer pain to distant areas — a trigger point in the shoulder can cause headaches, for example.
Finding and Treating Trigger Points
Locate trigger points by palpating muscle tissue for taut bands and nodules. Apply sustained pressure (30-90 seconds) using thumb, finger, or elbow. The initial discomfort should gradually ease as the trigger point releases. A 'twitch response' during treatment is a good sign.
Common Trigger Point Patterns
Upper trapezius points refer to temples (causing headaches). Infraspinatus points refer down the arm. Gluteal points can cause low back pain. Understanding these referral patterns helps you identify the source of your partner's discomfort.
