Stretching Before Massage — Warm-Up Exercises for Better Bodywork

Giving massage is physical work. Proper stretching before and after sessions protects your body from injury and improves your technique. These stretches prepare your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and back for bodywork.

    Why Stretch?

Massage practitioners commonly develop tension in their hands, wrists, forearms, and lower back. Stretching before a session warms up these areas, increasing blood flow and flexibility. It also centers your mind and prepares you to be present for your partner.

    Essential Pre-Massage Stretches

Wrist circles and flexion/extension (30 seconds each). Forearm stretches against a wall. Shoulder rolls and arm circles. Cat-cow stretches for the spine. Hamstring and hip flexor stretches for proper stance. Finger spreads and grip releases.

    Body Mechanics During Massage

Proper stance prevents injury: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Use body weight rather than arm strength. Keep your back straight and move from your legs and core. Alternate between hands, thumbs, and forearms to prevent overuse of any one tool.
