Petrissage Explained — Kneading Massage Technique Guide for Men

Petrissage encompasses all kneading, squeezing, and rolling massage techniques. It's the workhorse of massage — the technique that does the most to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and break up adhesions.

    Understanding Petrissage

Derived from the French 'pétrir' (to knead), petrissage lifts, squeezes, and compresses muscle tissue. Unlike effleurage which glides over the surface, petrissage grasps and works the tissue itself. It's particularly effective on the shoulders, back, and legs.

    Variations

Kneading: alternating hands squeeze and release muscle. Wringing: hands move in opposite directions, wringing the muscle like a towel. Skin rolling: thumbs push tissue forward while fingers lift and roll. Picking up: grasping and lifting muscle away from bone.

    When and How to Use

Apply petrissage after effleurage has warmed the tissue. Use on fleshy areas with adequate muscle mass. Avoid on bony prominences and thin-muscled areas. Adjust pressure based on your partner's feedback. Petrissage should feel satisfying, not painful.
