Meridians in Massage — Energy Pathways & Bodywork Techniques for Men

Meridians are energy pathways that form the foundation of traditional Asian bodywork, including Shiatsu, Thai massage, and acupressure. Understanding these pathways adds a powerful dimension to your massage practice.

    What Are Meridians?

In traditional Chinese medicine, meridians (called 'Sen' lines in Thai massage) are channels through which vital energy (qi or ki) flows. There are 12 primary meridians, each associated with specific organs and functions. When energy flow is blocked, illness and pain result.

    The 12 Primary Meridians

Six yin meridians (associated with solid organs): Lung, Spleen, Heart, Kidney, Pericardium, Liver. Six yang meridians (associated with hollow organs): Large Intestine, Stomach, Small Intestine, Bladder, Triple Burner, Gallbladder. Each has specific pathways along the body.

    Working with Meridians

Meridian-based massage follows the pathway of each channel, using pressure points (tsubo) along the way. Pressing along meridians in the direction of energy flow promotes health; working against the flow can disperse excess energy. This approach is central to Shiatsu and acupressure.
