Communication During Massage — How Men Can Set Boundaries & Give Feedback
Clear communication is the difference between a good massage and a great one. Learning when and how to communicate during sessions ensures both partners have the best possible experience.
Before You Start
Discuss: preferred pressure level (scale of 1-10), areas of tension or pain, areas to avoid, any injuries or health conditions, temperature comfort, and music preferences. This pre-session check-in takes 2-3 minutes and prevents misunderstandings.
During the Session
Check in about pressure within the first 5 minutes. Use simple questions: 'How's the pressure?' rather than 'Is this okay?' Read non-verbal cues: deep breathing = good, holding breath = too much pressure. Minimize unnecessary conversation to maintain relaxation.
Giving and Receiving Feedback
When receiving: speak up about pressure, don't endure discomfort silently. When giving: ask specific questions ('Would you like more pressure here?'). After the session, discuss what worked well and what to adjust next time. Feedback improves every future exchange.
